Dear Visitor,
Welcome to our Web Site. We are one of the largest Departments in the
University; we cover a broad range of activities, and we strive to
combine excellence with equity. We are proud of the fact that we have
six A-rated* researchers and an Emeritus Distinguished Professor on our
staff, and equally proud of the fact that we have four Distinguished
Teachers. We balance research into conceptually deep and abstract
topics such as Categorical Topology with active and large-scale
contract work in real-life topics such as Marine Resource Assessment.
We not only have a large postgraduate school, we also offer a course in
Effective Numeracy to students without matric mathematics. We are
deeply involved in outreach activities, and our Mathematical Digest is
sent out quarterly to over 2 000 schools countrywide.

* For our overseas visitors: An A-rating is awarded by the SA National
Research Foundation (NRF) to those researchers who are considered to be
world leaders in their field. There are at present 48 A-rated
researchers in South Africa, in all fields of Science and Engineering.
