Mathematics is not a spectator sport! The benefit of the Competition for participants is greatly enhanced by training and preparation. Schools which take some trouble in selecting their teams and encourage participants to work through competition papers from previous years, always achieve better results in the Competition. A variety of training material is available:

The UCT Maths Competition book includes all the problems, solutions, statistics and prizewinners. It is a must for learners or teachers wanting to prepare for the competition.

A Mathlete's Training Guide is an introduction to problem solving skills for mathematics competitions, by David Jacobs, three-time Gold Award winner in the competition.

The Guide contains eight chapters on topics like probability, rates and time and number theory, as well as more than 120 problems, with hints and full solutions.

Mathematical Digest is a quarterly publication for high schools, containing a variety of mathematical enrichment including much material suitable for training for the UCT Mathematics Competition.

The October 2014 edition (number 171) was the final issue. Back numbers still available for order.
