i*dU/dt + d^2 U/dx^2 + |U|^2U = 0
and the Sine-gordon equation which is
d^2 U/dt^2 - d^2 U/dx^2 + sin(u) =0
The simplest method of modelling these partial differential equations on
a computer is by looking at the corresponding partial difference equations
which result from the fact that on a computer we can only approximate derivatives by Newton
quotients for some finite dt or dx, i.e. we cannot take the limit of dt -> 0 or dx -> 0. This method
is the simplest because it is the natural way one would think of implementing these equations. However
this approach not optimal at all since for good results one needs really small dx's which means long
computing times. Also for the method to be stable at all there are limits on the size of dt which is usually
bounded above by dx^2 or dx^3 depending on the order of your PDE, which means even longer running
times. There are many more sophisticated methods using spectral techniques etc... but at my level the
above analysis was sufficient. Anyway, that's the method, let me now show you the pictures.
This is a "breather" of the sine-gordon equation.
I wanted to make more pictures but for some reason Photoshop kept
copying only part of the palette from matlab so half the colours were missing
on the pictures which made them look crap. I couldn't figure out how to fix
it and wasted too much time on it already anyway, so I have to leave it like this.
I found out today that the Sci-fi channel is producing a Dune mini-series. If you
know me a little more than just by name you will be aware that I think Dune was
the best book I have ever read. So clearly I'm quite excited about this mini-series.
As I went snooping around the web for info on this mini-series I found out that
apparently the series is in response to a trilogy of Dune prequels that are being
released at the moment. The prequel trilogy is being cowritten by Brian Herbert
who is the son of Frank Herbert, the author of the original Dune series of books, and
Kevin J. Anderson who apparently wrote a few sci-fi books set in Star Wars and
X-file type settings. The first book of the new trilogy is called "Dune: House Atreides"
and has apparently been released already. The second book is called "Dune: House Harkonnen".
It has also been written already and is supposed to be released near the end of the year.
The final book in the prequel trilogy will be "Dune: House Corrino" and this one is scheduled
for next year. The mini-series will supposedly be 6-hours long and will be shown on
the Sci-fi channel in December. Can't wait. Now I just need to find a friend who has
the sci-fi channel :-) . Offers can be e-mailed to thufir@mindless.com.
Below are some links all about the Dune novels and the mini-series.
I read some cool stuff on electronic paper yesterday. I'm not
going to explain what it is because the links below will do that
but I just want to say that I can't wait until this stuff comes
out. Just imagine, you'll carry one book around which contains
or can download all your other books. So if you decide you want to read
this or that you just press a couple of buttons and the writing on
the page changes to the book that you want. Anyway, have a look at
these links below.
